Organization structure
The Organization Structure module describes what your organization is made of: its companies and subsidiaries, and the divisions, business units, branches, departments and teams inside them, as a single hierarchy. You assign people to units, and those units define each person's team for permissions.
:::note Organizations and units In Modulix, an organization is the whole workspace you sign in to, with its own data and users (see Switch organization). This module describes the structure inside one organization. It does not create organizations. :::
Before you begin
- The Organization Structure module must be enabled. See Modules.
- To see the structure, you need View the organization structure (
org.unit.read). Everyone has it by default except custom roles. - To create, edit, move, delete units and assign people, you need the other permissions of the module. Administrators have them all by default. See Permissions.
Unit types and how they nest
| Type | Can sit under | Legal entity |
|---|---|---|
| Company | Top level only | Yes |
| Subsidiary | Company, subsidiary | Yes, with an ownership percentage |
| Division | Company, subsidiary | |
| Business unit | Company, subsidiary, division, business unit | |
| Branch | Company, subsidiary, division, business unit | |
| Department | Company, subsidiary, division, business unit, branch, department | |
| Team | Business unit, branch, department, team |
A group of companies is a parent company that owns subsidiaries. Legal details (legal name, registration number, tax ID, currency) are kept only on companies and subsidiaries.
The hierarchy can be up to 10 levels deep by default (see Settings).
The structure page
In the sidebar, select Organization. The Organization structure page opens.
- At the top, a button per unit type shows how many units of that type exist, for example 3 Departments. Select one to show only that type; select it again to show everything.
- Type in Search by name, code or legal name… to find a unit.
- Switch between Tree and List. In the tree, use Expand all or Collapse all, or the arrow next to a unit.
- Each unit shows its type, an Inactive badge when it is inactive, and its numbers of members and sub-units.
- The actions button (…) of a unit offers Add sub-unit, Edit and Delete.
To choose which view opens by default, set Default view in Organization Structure preferences on your profile.
Create your structure
If the structure is empty, the page says No organization structure yet. Start with your company, then add the units beneath it.
- Select New unit (or Create your company on an empty page). To create a unit directly under another one, use Add sub-unit on that unit instead.
- Choose the Type.
- Choose the Parent. For a company, choose None (top level). The list only offers units that can contain the chosen type.
- Enter the Name.
- Optionally fill in:
- Code: a unique identifier, for example
BRIGHT-CA. Modulix writes codes in uppercase. - Manager: a member of the organization.
- Status: Active or Inactive.
- Description.
- Code: a unique identifier, for example
- For a company or a subsidiary, fill in the Legal entity section: Legal name, Registration number, Tax / VAT ID, Currency and, for a subsidiary, Ownership (%) (the share held by the parent).
- Optionally fill in Contact & address: Email, Phone, Website, Address, City, Region / state, Postal code and Country (a two-letter ISO code, for example
CA). - Fill in any additional fields your organization defined.
- Select Create. Modulix shows, for example, Department created.
If Modulix says "Choose a valid parent", the parent you picked cannot contain this type of unit. Pick another one from the list.
View and edit a unit
Select a unit to open its page. It has three tabs:
| Tab | What it shows |
|---|---|
| Overview | General (type, parent, manager, status, description), Legal entity for companies and subsidiaries, Contact & address, and Additional information if your organization uses custom fields. |
| Sub-units | The units directly below it. Select Add sub-unit to add one. |
| Members | The people assigned to the unit. |
To change the unit, select Edit, change the fields and select Save changes. Modulix shows Unit updated.
Move a unit
To move a unit, edit it and choose another Parent. Its sub-units move with it. Modulix refuses moves that break the nesting rules, moving a unit under itself or one of its own sub-units, or going deeper than the maximum depth.
You can also change a unit's Type, as long as its parent and its sub-units still fit the rules.
Assign people to units
People can belong to several units, with an optional position, for example Sales lead. Each person has one primary unit: where they mainly work.
- Open the unit and select the Members tab.
- Select Add member.
- Choose the Person and optionally enter their Position.
- Tick Primary unit to make this unit their primary one. A person's first assignment is primary automatically; ticking it on another assignment replaces their previous primary unit.
- Select Assign. Modulix shows Assigned.
The person receives the Assigned to a unit notification. In the members list, the actions button (…) of a person offers Edit position, Make primary unit and Remove from unit. If you remove someone's primary assignment, their oldest remaining assignment becomes primary.
You can also manage a person's units from Administration > Users: their units appear under their name, and the Edit dialog has an Organization units section. Everyone sees their own units in the Organization units card of their profile.
When someone is removed from the organization, their assignments are removed too.
Teams and permissions
The structure also defines teams for permissions. A person's team is everyone assigned to one of their units, or to a unit below them.
Roles can limit some permissions to Their team’s records, for example "view the opportunities of my team". See Roles and permissions.
For example, if Maya is assigned to the Sales department, and Sales West and Sales East are teams under it, Maya's team includes the people of all three units. A person assigned only to Sales East has the people of Sales East as their team.
Deactivate or delete a unit
- To stop using a unit but keep its history, edit it and set Status to Inactive.
- To delete it, select Delete unit on its page (or Delete in its actions menu) and confirm. This permanently removes the unit and its member assignments.
A unit that still has sub-units cannot be deleted: move or delete its sub-units first, or mark it inactive instead. Other modules can also prevent a deletion while they still use the unit.
The dashboard widget
The Organization widget on the dashboard summarizes your companies and their structure, with the number of units and of inactive units, and an Open button. To hide it, turn off Show the structure overview on the dashboard in Organization Structure preferences on your profile.

How it connects to other modules
- Roles and permissions: units define teams for the Their team’s scope.
- Users: unit badges and an Organization units section on the Users page.
- Custom fields: add your own fields to units, for example a cost center. See Custom fields.
- Audit log: unit and assignment changes are recorded.
